1980 Wheelmen England Trip
Quote from TME71 on November 12, 2020, 5:51 pmForty years ago was the second of three amazing Wheelmen trips that I had the great fortune of participating in. The first was the Bi-Centennial ride from Dearborn, Michigan to Philadelphia in 1976. The last of the three was the Rhine Cruise (this time with Joyce) in 1989. But in the middle, in 1980, as the trip to England. It was both a motor coach tour, taking in all the usual England tour sites (and Paul Grimshaw, Dianne Ferris and I took a trip up to Edenborough), but also rides and bike meets with the final being a Century ride. The Century ride was on an old Roman Road and I was taking in the history of a Roman road, through an ancient English countryside on a 1880's bicycle when a tank cross the road and supersonic fighters, very low, flew by. This was also an area for military training. Along the ride I took a 'sider' rather than a header. Anyway, I found the Wheelmen Magazine with the articles of the trip by such Wheelmen luminaries as Gary Woodward, Bob Menker, Alex Pollock, Jack Castor, Carl Weidman, Ed Berry Jr, Janet Wightman, David Metz, John Vanderpool and others. Here is a PDF file (by permission. A slow download but worth the wait) of the articles and I have posted some personal photos on the Facebook Wheelmen page. Please go there and see the photos. If you don't know what the Wheelmen did in that era please read the articles. If, like me, you were there please read them again enjoy the memories, I did. Tom Edfors
