1889-91 Eagle Pedal Rubber

I am working on recreating 1889-91 Eagle pedal rubber. My 1890 Eagle has original pedal rubber but it is deteriorated. Using the original rubber pieces and catalog images I have created a 3-D computer model of the rubber piece and then 3-D printed them out of plastic to make sure they are dimensionally correct. I still need to make a few final adjustments but it is pretty close. The 3-D printed plastic version would work well for display purposes but I am also going to explore casting them in rubber or cutting them out of rubber on a CNC machine. I am reaching out to other Eagle owners to find out who might be interested in purchasing new plastic or rubber pedal pieces. My one-off 3-D printed plastic pieces cost $25.00 each so $100 for a pair of pedals. Not sure yet what rubber ones will cost but the more I make of either material the better pricing should be. If any Eagle owners are interested in new pedal rubber please contact me at jkidder@kidderarch.com and I can start to get an idea of quantity.

Jeff,

The EAGLE high wheel safety was only offered 1889-91 and not 1892.

You should confer with Alan Pohill who makes the Columbia and Overman(Victor) cast soft rubbers. He would be of help in his years of experience of making quality pedal rubbers.

I had an Eagle with original rubbers and they originally and were white color. I made a set once but used black delrin plastic and manually machined them on a milling machine. They wouldn't have been safe for actual riding since the delrin plastic is slippery and the soft rubber being a cast product as originally done is the best.

It is interesting that the Eagle rubbers have two pins going through each rubber to keep them from spinning since the pedal was the only way to mount the machine since there was no  mounting step like found on a Star or Ordinary high wheel bicycle.

Good luck with your endeavor as no one that I have heard of has made a soft cast rubber Eagle pedal rubber.

Mike,

I had thought Eagle high wheel safety date range was 1889-91 but per Carey Williams' Eagle article in the May 2015 Wheelmen Magazine the high wheel Eagle was shown in their 1892 catalog. I don't know how many were actually sold but thought I would extend the range to 1892 just in case someone has one. Since they probably did not sell many of them in 1892 I edited my original post and corrected Eagle date range to be 1889-91.

Thanks - Jeff
