Here are the tentative plans for the annual Memorabilia & Swap Meet at the Bicycle Museum of America.

Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 9:00 to 3:00 pm.
We'll be looking for a couple of Wheelmen for informal presentations about pertinent topics. Any ideas?
We'll have the presentations after a break for lunch.
Would you like a table to show your collection of memorabilia or a selection of your collection?

Yeah, I know. I later removed that line.
My thoughts were discounted by some others.

With the re-done spoking arrangement the spoke ends are not fixed at the hub, but simply pass through with a blunt end.  The other end uses a spoke nipple at the rim. I thought with the spoke able to go inward when the rubber is passing the pavement, allowing the rim to flex.

Several people offered evidence to that not being the problem.

By the way, I am open to suggestions or theories as to why this 56" 1885 Expert (with re-built wheel) would break three front wheel tire wires. Three different wire installers, three different locations, three different sources of wire, two different rubber (new rubber with #2 wire), two different states (IL(1) & OH (2)), but only one rider (Oh no!).

This high wheel may be sold in the future and I am not going to hide it's 'history'.
After a year and a half of installing the tire, the front tire broke while riding slowly on a trail.
New wire put on by a different person.  That lasted five months or so and broke while riding easy on a flat residential street.
New wire put on by yet another person. That lasted 366 days and broke while riding along a fairly level park road.
Nothing spectacular occurred leading up to any of these breaks. 
The wheel was re-built long before I bought it and it was not ridden for 20? years and sat in a house. The single wall rim is an original (I assume, but perhaps not with this particular machine?) and new spokes were 'reversed' by a head in the hub and spoke nipples at the rim.

I have an 1885 Columbia Expert with a 56" front wheel that was re-worked decades ago and made unfit to ride. The rest of the Expert is fine and I've ridden it over 3,500 miles before tire wires started breaking.
Does anyone have a usable 56" Expert front wheel they would be willing to let go? Maybe part of an Expert with a questionable backbone or fork. This wheel could be part of a swap to make a display bicycle from unrideable parts.

An Ohio Wheelmen has acquired a Columbia Expert that is missing pedals.
Does anyone out there have some available pedals that would work?

Saddle and handlebars exist, missing pedals.

Well, I am fortunate that a museum wants me to get comfortable riding it for parades! 
Saves me the price of buying one to see if I like it!
I was told it came to the museum from the Good family that was involved in the founding of the Heidelberg College (now University) in Tiffin, Ohio way back in the 1850s.
The local man who restored it rode it around town when it was done.

Does anyone keep track of Star serial numbers?
As seen in the photo, the latest date is 1885 and the serial number is 3195.

I've had the opportunity to learn to ride this Star and have been requested to ride it in parades and exhibits next year.
After spending a bunch of time this afternoon re-learning mounting and dismounting, I'm ready for a maneuvering session sometime in the next few weeks (before the snow flies).

Maybe my real question ought to be what shape was a New Rapid grip? Pear shaped?
I do not have access to the bike, it's someone else's and is 60 miles away.

A New Rapid needs new grips.  We've been helping get a New Rapid back to rideable condition for the son of a late Wheelmen member.

Who makes replacement grips for a New Rapid?

I think what Mark meant in his request was not to post complaints to this message board about the message board, but rather send specific complaints, suggestions, constructive criticisms, etc to the people that control the message board.

We can't expect Mark and/or Alison to monitor every board and post and pick out items that need to be repaired or updated or ....

It is somewhat nearby (70 miles), if someone really wants it and settles all financials satisfactorily, I could go get it and store it until convenient.
I have never boxed one up and don't plan to start now, so local pickup or meet somewhere.
Gas money will be appreciated.
