I have a 1895 Lenox safety with original wood 28" rims. I do not have tires for it yet but have it assembled to show at our Memorabilia Meet next month.
To be able to gently wheel it around without carrying it everywhere, I bought two 26" x 2" inner tubes at the local bike shop. Stretching them over the rim and putting moderate pressure in them protects the rims from damage.
