Saddle comparison between Victor and Victory
« on: April 17, 2019, 10:08:44 PM »
As I understand it the Victory was based on the Victor.  While comparing the Victor to the Victory I noticed the saddles were quite different.  The original Victor had horizontal single  coil springs  similar to a Columbia where as the Victory has vertical springs similar to the European design.  I have been told that the Victory seat is actually more comfortable than the Victor design.  I am curious though if it is possible to retrofit a Victor style seat on a Victory.  And if so has anyone reproduced the parts like they have for the Columbia’s.
Thank you in advance.

Ed,
The Victory saddle is a copy of an original  Townsend saddle offered in the 1880's. This saddle has the advantage of being able to re raised or lowered in the front or the rear or both without having to loosen the rear clamp on the backbone frame. It also as the advantage of being able to be tightened to keep the leather tensioned throughout it's life without having to loosen the rear clamp on the backbone frame.
If an original 1885 Victor saddle or reproduction thereof is found, it would fit a Victory high wheel replica as it was modeled from the 1885 first year Victor high wheel bicycle.

Mike, that is a Brooks International copy, not a Townsend

Thanks Dave.  So am still curious.  As I understand it the Victory is a faithful reproduction of the Victor.  Did the Victor ever use that style of seat?

No.  You could put most any saddle you liked on one though.  As far as I know Victors always came with Victor saddles
