Hello every one,
I wanted to share information in regards to Philip Eckman's Funeral that is happening September 10th at Arlington National Cemetery. Philip passed away last August, but the waiting list to be buried in Arlington is quite long. Below you will find the details of the Funeral. If you have any questions please message me here, on facebook, or look me up in the Wheelmen Directory please.
Philip was a military bicycle fan and shared his passion with the Wheelmen through events, as well as the magazine. Phil attended the Rhine River tour in 1989, and one of the attached photos was taken at the 1989 national meet in Williamsburg Va.(His right side eye was black from taking a header on Century day, but he positioned himself in such a way to hide it for the cabinet card photo.)
The Eckmans have told me so many great stories about so many of you. With great sincerity, the Eckmans smiled contently as they told me about the incredible life they shared with the Wheelmen.
It would be a great honor and pleasure for any of you to attend.
Thanks so much,
Brian Birkner
We're planning to have our final closure of Phil's earthly life with his upcoming military burial at Arlington Cemetery on Tuesday, September 10. We totally understand that a Tuesday during the work week can be difficult, so please don't feel obligated to come if your circumstances don't permit. But if you are able to attend, we welcome you to share this day with us.
Arlington Cemetery is a hallowed burial ground for our country's fallen soldiers and has always been Dad's desired resting place. It will be a special, significant ceremony with full military honors.
Date: Tuesday, September 10
Time: 3:00pm service; arrive 45 minutes prior at 2:15pm
Place: Our cars will line up starting at 2:15pm outside the Administration Building; 1 Memorial Avenue, Arlington VA 22211
Notes:
* The Arlington Cemetery metro stop (blue line) is right on Memorial Avenue and just a 3 minute walk to the Admin Building.
* Also the Memorial Bridge crossing into D.C. is under construction.
* For the funeral, we will line up in our cars at 2:15, then caravan behind Dad's remains which will be carried on a caisson to his burial place.
The graveside service should last about 30 minutes. I believe you have the option to walk behind the caisson if you wish, but you'll need
to be able to keep up with the procession.
* The cemetery has a wonderful website with many details and a video on what to expect at a funeral.
Afterwards, Mom would like to host all of us for an early dinner at Bonefish Grill restaurant. The restaurant is 2.8 miles south of Arlington Cemetery, near the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City (also close to the Reagan airport). The address is: Bonefish Grill, 1101 S Joyce St, Arlington, VA 22202.
