Riveted spokes were only one the very first Star made by Smith ...with a 100% failure rate ....bikes were returned and  replacement wheels were  supplied.    Spokes on the conventional American Stars ..have a head at the rim and are threaded into the hub ...  ....later spokes same basic construction but thread into a captured nut that is within the hub ...   The side  frames on the 1881 and 2 are different also .. made from two pieces .... later going to a more solid single piece side frame,  your's is not 81 ..

  Extended Wheelmen family , very sad news Jim Ogland passed away yesterday .  Jim has been a strong positive light for the Wheelmen for many decades serving as National Commander  and an inspiration with his cross country rides and many overseas bicycle trips. .Please see link to article about Jim's crossing America both east-west and north-south .   With sympathy to the extended Ogland family  Carey Williams     http://www.thewheelmen.org/sections/americanjourneys/ogland/Criss_Crossing_America.pdf

Hello all security settings have been set high  as any site is a magnet for hacking ....the old one had been compromised and there were attacks on the new one before it opened .....yes there are folks out there just like to mess with you

Hello all

Very sorry for all the technical troubles that we were having with the old message board ... long live the new message board ! 
We now have a 3rd category    for reproduction and bike builders . 
 Look forward to seeing everyone at the up coming national Wheelmen meet in Oberlin .
