WHAT BRAND BICYCLE IS THIS? WHEN & WHERE WAS IT MANUFACTURED?
« on: December 16, 2018, 11:23:40 AM »
The picture attached (taken in the early 1900s) shows my Grandfather with his new bicycle. Can anyone tell me that make of the bicycle and where and when it was produced? (Note; the main frame has some unique curves to it.) Thanks

I believe it is an Iver Johnson. They were manufactured in Fitchburg, Mass. The frame is hard tire style with latter pneumatic tires dating it about 1893.

Looks like 1892 Lovell Diamond per this ad from August 12, 1892 issue of The Referee & Cycle Trade Journal:

Hello,

I would agree with Jeff -1893 but might actually have been sold as a pneumatic . Lovell retained this frame style (Model 1) for a number of years 1890 - 93 . The badge seems to have been moved from the down tube to the head tube for later models. Looks as though it may have a "Perfection" alarm bell mounted on the handle bar ?

Just thoughts here - not certain. Nice photo !

Thanks to all for your responses.
Do you guys know if this bike used a chain-drive - I don't see a chain?
That was a great observation on the "bell" - it's something I hadn't noticed before!
Has anyone ever seen this type of bike come up for sale - I'd like to find one.

A high resolution scan would help.  It has a chain, it is on the far side of the photo.  At least it SHOULD have a chain
